Job overview

This is a key accounting role, with the post holder providing dedicated support to the Assistant Capital Accountant, Fixed Asset Manager and Capital Reporting Accountant in preparing and reconciling financial management information on the Trust’s capital programme to allow timely and accurate monitoring of expenditure, income and cash flow.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will prepare information regarding capital purchases and disposals and support the processes underpinning the operation and maintenance of the Trust’s Asset Register. To support the annual asset verification reviews of the Trust Asset Register, in conjunction with other directorates to ensure its accuracy and produce and reconcile information from the Asset Register to assist in the production of financial returns and accounting statements.

The role will develop and lead the process of ensuring the correct split of expenditure between capital and revenue is applied.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assist the Assistant Capital Accountant and Fixed Asset Manager with the day-to-day maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register including the completion of fixed asset verification exercise.

Process the Fixed Asset Additions, Disposals and Transfers in the Fixed Asset Module (FAM).

Assist the Assistant Capital Accountant and Fixed Asset Manager will the preparation of reconciled accounts, in particular Asset under Construction (AUC) and assess whether the amounts are to be carried forward, capitalised or written-off.

Assist with the production of a comprehensive and fully auditable set of working papers for the year-end accounts.

Post general ledger journals and assist in month end close.

Work with other finance colleagues to ensure consistency in applying good governance practice in the areas of financial controls assurance and compliance with the Trust’s Standing Orders (and associated documents).

Provide support as necessary in other areas of Capital Finance in relation to specific projects or peaks in workload.

Adopt a flexible team approach in terms of cover for colleagues within the section.

Work closely with colleagues to help the Trust deliver strategic and operational goals.

Maintain and develop working relationships with appropriate external agencies.

Provide clear and concise working papers (including electronically) and work within set routines with little direct supervision.

Maintain procedure notes for own area of responsibility to ensure that information is processed in accordance with procedures and is available to support statutory returns and financial reporting requirements

Experience

Essential criteria

Previous experience of working in Capital Accounting / Financial Management.

Ability to understand a range of finance work practices and procedures, both day-to-day and more complex.

Experience of working with a variety of computer systems including spreadsheet packages (Microsoft Excel), databases (Microsoft Access) and financial ledger systems.

Desirable criteria

Working knowledge of NHS capital accounting requirements

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

Educated to a minimum of 5 GCSEs Grade C or above including Mathematics and English (or equivalent)

Educated to 3 A-levels / NVQ Level 3 or equivalent

Desirable criteria

Actively in pursuit of an AAT qualification
